The answer wouldn't be different, but the question has cultural resonance. Maybe that's why?

Also, I'm pretty sure I'd need a survival kind regardless of the climate of the island in question. But I pretend otherwise because I'm not wasting one of my precious five books on that.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1246220242273461143.post-28399860846391008522011-03-30T02:27:42.787+01:002011-03-30T02:27:42.787+01:00This is one of those great oddities of English tha...This is one of those great oddities of English that I'm sure 99.9% of native speakers get "wrong." Desert, here, does mean deserted (though certainly the other meaning isn't foreclosed!). Merriam-Webster actually has "desolate and sparsely occupied or unoccupied [a desert island]" as it's first definition of "desert (adj.)." "of or relating to a desert" is second.

It certainly doesn't help matters that the quintessential image of a desert island fits both senses.nicolehttp://www.bibliographing.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1246220242273461143.post-19046323439685409752011-03-29T18:49:00.379+01:002011-03-29T18:49:00.379+01:00On either of those desert islands, I think I'd...On either of those desert islands, I think I'd want an instruction book for how to build a raft and get home. :-)Elizabeth Varadan, Authorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01708206753256682635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1246220242273461143.post-77248732571205701362011-03-29T18:43:33.521+01:002011-03-29T18:43:33.521+01:00A dessert island - what a great idea! :--)A dessert island - what a great idea! :--)rhapsodyinbookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07041412748239010264noreply@blogger.com
