Quote of the week

Among many negative reviews for the book "Then We Came to the End" (which I actually quite enjoyed), I couldn't help but notice this one:
the office tv show is better
This quote, the title of an unremarkable review expressing disappointment with the story and its ending, does not cease to amuse me. It's like saying "Battlestar Galactica" is better than Isaac Asimov's books (robots!). It's like saying "Desperate Housewives" is like "A Doll's House" (...drama?). It's like saying "Futurama" is like "Snow Crash" (this one's a cheat - I haven't read "Snow Crash" but Wikipedia claims they share a pizza delivery theme).

Okay, your turn.

  1. I really enjoyed this book as well. I think people were expecting a light jaunt a la Office Space and didn't get what they expected.

  2. I loved Then We Came to the End!
The review on Amazon reminds me of those teenage girls who read Wuthering Heights because it's mentioned in those vampyre books by Stephenie M. and then complain that it is SOOOOO BORING compared to the Twilight series, which is WAAAAY BETTER.

  3. I really liked, perhaps even loved, Then We Came to the End. I have found very few people who have liked it. I can understand why the commenter compared it to The Office, but I also agree with your critique.

I think Then We Came to the End is like a modern Trollope. And I love the opening line: "We were fractious and overpaid."
